Cyclone Mocha made landfall in Myanmar and southeastern Bangladesh, causing widespread damage. The storm, with winds up to 195 km/h, hit between Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Sittwe in Myanmar. In Sittwe, streets were flooded as the storm surge hit the town. Homes in a Rohingya camp in Kyaukphyu, Myanmar were destroyed by the wind, and residents were concerned about the rising sea tide. In Teknaf, Bangladesh, high winds caused trees to fall and disrupted traffic. The Myanmar Red Cross Society is preparing for a major emergency response. Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are not allowed to build concrete homes, and many of their camps are built on hillsides, making them vulnerable to landslides. Forecasters expect Cyclone Mocha to bring heavy rain, which could trigger landslides.
